When working out, we’re all looking for a push to take us to the next level. Whether it’s packing in the protein, BCAA, and creatine, we want to be fitter, stronger and the best physical version of ourselves.
So are there other supplements that can help propel us forward when traditional methods aren’t doing business?
SARMS are being talked about more widely these days to accelerate the muscle-building process, and there’s little doubt that they are being used to good effect.
But what exactly are they, and are they legal and safe to use?
WHAT ARE SARMS, AND WHAT DO THEY DO?
First, let’s cover what they are exactly and how you use them
SARMs stands for Selective Androgen Receptor Modulators. They’re a relatively new class of drugs that work by attaching to your body’s male hormone receptors. They have anabolic, or muscle-building, properties, and unlike steroids, they target specific types of tissues. |
They were discovered at the end of the last century when scientists were working on a possible solution for stimulating hormone generation.
SARMs help the muscle-building process by strengthening muscles and bones. They also help to combat muscle wastage caused by the aging process. They are great for burning fat for fuel, decreasing recovery time, building lean muscle mass, and increasing bone density and are being favored due to their ease of use. They are perfect for bulking or cutting.
They work similarly to an anabolic steroid in that they encourage muscle growth by affecting male hormone receptors. SARMS affect specific tissues, unlike steroids, which target the entire body.
You will still need to work out and follow a healthy diet to see results, but SARMs can improve your muscles’ response to these stimuli.
ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS TO USING SARMS?
As SARMS are unregulated and still very much in the research stages, we don’t know the full extent of potential long-term side effects for regular users.
Adverse reactions, including liver toxicity, have occurred in people taking products containing SARMs. Researchers have also noted that they can potentially increase the risk of heart attack and stroke.
There’s little doubt that while they have the potential to boost strength and muscularity, there is a huge health risk in taking SARMs, which may well outweigh the benefits of taking them.
ARE SARMS LEGAL?
It is illegal to buy SARMs packaged in supplement form and labeled for human consumption or as dietary supplements.
SARMs are prohibited by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) for competing athletes, and with good reason.
You can legally buy and sell SARMs if using them as “research chemicals”, but it is illegal to sell or purchase capsules for human consumption or labeled as dietary supplements. In addition to this, as SARMs are not FDA-approved for recreational use, the nutritional supplements included in them are not regulated, so this will pose a potential health risk to anyone using them.
Donald D. Ashley, J.D., director of the Office of Compliance in the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, made the following statement recently:
“We are extremely concerned about unscrupulous companies marketing body-building products with potentially dangerous ingredients. Body-building products that contain selective androgen receptor modulators, or SARMs, have not been approved by the FDA and are associated with serious safety concerns, including the potential to increase the risk of heart attack or stroke and life-threatening reactions like liver damage. We will continue to take action against companies marketing these products to protect the public health.”
Various companies are trying to skate around the legal issues by claiming that they are selling the product for research purposes only and adding the disclaimer- “Under no circumstances are these products sold for human consumption.”
If that doesn’t convince you that they are a “no-go” area, try to remember that should anyone suffer adverse reactions, the company will be covered legally.
There are currently no legal consequences when it comes to buying SARMs, but if you are caught in possession, you had better be sure you can prove that you bought them purely for research purposes.
SHOULD I TAKE SARMS?
SARMs are a relatively new scientific discovery, so they are not FDA-approved for recreational use yet. This means that the nutritional ingredients are not regulated, and users are taking a significant risk to their health by consuming them.
The World Anti-Doping Agency also prohibits them, so competing athletes cannot take them.
The health issues associated with taking SARMs regularly signify that this is a very grey area, and much more research is needed before they can be officially approved for legal consumption.
We have already seen many potential health risks that outweigh the benefits of taking SARMs, so this “shortcut” to success may be short-lived.
ARE THERE LEGAL ALTERNATIVES TO SARMS?
There’s little doubt that if it wasn’t for the potential side effects, there are significant benefits to consuming SARMS.
The ability to build muscle mass and greater strength faster than usual is a top selling point, and the decreased recovery time needed enables more workouts and fewer rests.
However, like steroid, it might not be worth it.
